Basketball Game

I got a call from a friend in our ward to see if I’d be interested in going to a Creighton basketball game on Wednesday the 13th of January. That happened to be the first day of school for me but I didn’t have too much homework so I said I would go. The game was against the Southern Illinois Salukis and it was a good one at that.

Creighton had the lead most of the game but let Southern Illinois back into the game in the last few minutes. The game was tied with only 35 seconds remaining and Creighton had the ball. Antoine Young took the ball and drove the middle and put up a shot over two salukis for the winning basket with 1.2 seconds left.

I haven’t had much experience attending college basketball games outside of BYU. The atmosphere at the Marriot Center is very different from the Qwest Center and a Creighton basketball game. It seemed like the atmosphere was more professional at the Qwest Center.

I got the feeling this could be a Jazz game when I first arrived. I think it was a combination of really nice seats and alcohol that made the atmosphere more like a pro game than a college game. Another factor could have been the fact that both teams are not that good this year. Hovering around the middle of your conference (in a weaker conference) might hurt fan interest. Also, I wasn’t sitting with the students, but with the “older” crowd. The student section was right behind one of the baskets instead of on a side. I felt like the student section (they stood the whole game of course) wasn’t as intense as they could have been.

There were only 12 cheerleaders (called dance team members) which didn’t do much the whole game. Interestingly, there are eight or so “cheerleaders”, both guys and girls, in front of the student section wearing blue and white striped overalls with a white shirt. These are the guys that threw shirts into the stands and carried the Bluejay flag on to the court.

All in all, it wasn’t a bad experience it was a different experience. I hope to go again sometime before we leave Omaha. In the end the game was exciting, the atmosphere was…different…, and the Qwest Center was nice. I did have a lingering thought throughout the game, “what exactly is a saluki?” After doing a little research I have discovered that it is a dog. A saluki is a breed of sighthound and they are native to Egypt before being brought to Europe by the English, and eventually everywhere. Here are a few pictures....

I am finishing up a few more posts which should come out here soon. Hopefully you have all brushed up on your Harry Potter as I'll be talking about some things I don't like about it. Also I am looking for any suggestions for the next Post the Law segment. I was looking at doing something on wills or maybe some Constitutional issues surrounding church and state. I also take requests if anyone has a question regarding the law of the US or a specific state.
