March Madness and the BCS

I have returned from the abyss of busyness to spread a little joy on the blog. I have had a lot to do these past few weeks and I haven’t had the time to write. This week should be a little easier so I should have some more time to get some posts done. Today’s post was really to announce the fact that I’m back, but I do have one thing I want to make a point about….

Have you ever wondered why no other college athletic sport is governed by a system like the BCS in college football? If the BCS was such a great idea then shouldn’t it be administered throughout all of college athletics? Just imagine how college basketball would function this year under a BCS system. The national championship would be played early next month between Kansas and Kentucky. It was clear that these two were the top two teams and that they were the favorites to meet in the championship. Other good schools from big conferences would be invited to play in big money games against other schools from big conferences. Schools like Syracuse, Duke, West Virginia, Ohio State, Kansas State, etc. (Except Villanova, they would be the third Big East team so they don’t get invited because that would be too many from one conference). We might allow the best “little school” in so we don’t look like a monopoly, this year it is New Mexico clearly the best of the little schools.

Do you see the ridiculous aspect of it all? The national championship will not have Kansas as they were eliminated in the tournament already. Among the last sixteen teams we have five “non-BCS” type schools like Northern Iowa, Butler, Xavier, Saint Mary’s, and Cornell.

In the end it just reinforces my belief that the college football postseason system is unfair and inaccurate. Selecting two teams to play for the national championship without having them earn it on the playing field is politics, not sports. Someday, maybe (but doubtful), we will have a college football playoff. I would be content to even see a four team playoff. An eight to sixteen team college football tournament would be better but I’ll take what I can get.

Here is a toast to college basketball, for the madness that you bring to March. Cheers!!!

I agree with Dave - college football needs to change. However, don't let him fool you into thinking he's happy that a bunch of no name low ranked schools are beating the higher ranked ones. He had Kansas winning in his bracket and was devastated when they lost.

I was devastated because I was in the 100% percentile in a lot of bracket groups. Now I will slip into the 80%. Not bad, just not as good as it could have been.
